  • PhD Project: "Keeping it Real? - Museums and Technology Use in the Digital Era"

Digitisation has been one of the main issues driving the museum world for decades now. However, the discussion often lacks a sincere reflection on the genesis of the institutional relationship with the material object and its effects. Especially the history of technology use as an influencing factor in the valorisation of digitisation is often overlooked. This represents a distinct lack of awareness for institutional self-perception and external presentation. The dissertation will provide a diachronic examination of the role of material culture in the handling of digitisation, including the institutional struggle with the perceived authenticity of digital heritage.

The dissertation is part of the research project "Modelldigitalisierung 3D von Natur- und Kulturgut Oldenburg" (MoDi), a cooperation of the State Museum Nature and Man and the Jade University of Applied Sciences. It has received a three-year funding by the Volkswagen Foundation.

The PhD project looks at the perception of material objects, traditional media, and digital technologies in museums.
