    Completing her Masters degree in Painting conservation in 2011 with a thesis entitled 'Van Gogh's cobalt blue: Research into the possible causes for trace elements found by means of SEM-EDX in two distinct variants of cobalt aluminate used by Vincent Van Gogh 1886 - 1890'  Steyn continued her training as a paintings through a post-initial trajectory. This program, also at the University of Amsterdam consisted of two internships. The firstfocussed on structural treatments of paintings (at Stichting Restauratie Atelier Limburg) and treatments of modern paintings (at TATE Modern), gaining a cum laude distinction for her final thesis entitled: Lichtenstein's Mustard on White: The consolidation of Magna acrylic solution paint onto a transparent poly(methyl methacrylate) support''. After completing her studies she worked in a private conservation studio as a junior conservator until starting her PhD in 2015.

    Steyn is currently working on her PhD dissertation at the University of Amsterdam which focusses on issues relating to the removal of surface dirt from Unvarnished Modern Oil Paintings. This research is imbedded in the Cleaning Modern Oil Paint project (CMOP) which is an NWO funded JPI initiative with partners TATE, The Courtauld Institute of Art, University of Pisa, Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed (RCE) and the University of Amsterdam. Paintings from the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and Gemeentemuseum den Haag are investigated and both the material and immaterial issues that relate to the complexity of their conservation treatment are explored.
