Dr Francesco Chiaravalloti is Tenured Assistant Professor of Cultural Policy and Management, Co-Chair of the research group Artistic Knowing: Research in and on Art and Cultural Practices, and Academic Coordinator of the Minor Arts and Cultural Management.
The focus of his work as a teacher and as a researcher is on the enhancement of the appreciation of arts, culture, and creativity by individuals, organizations, and communities.
Francesco is Associate Editor of the International Journal of Arts Management, and member of the Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) roundtable Cultural Sciences & Linguistics of the Dutch Research Council (NWO) and of the Cultural Policy working group at the Boekmanstichting.
His research projects have been funded by the European Union (e.g. Horizon 2020 MSCA-RISE project "SPACEX : Spatial Practices in Art and ArChitecture for Empathetic EXchange" where he acted as a co-applicant and a principal investigator, and the Creative Europe project "OperaVision Next Generation", where he acted as evaluator) and by Dutch national and local public funds (e.g. NWO KIEM "In dialogue with users: the relevance of opera in society", where he acted as applicant and project leader, and the AFK project “Increasing the response rate of short audience surveys: A qualitative and quantitative study of the (non-)audience of Summer Dance Forever, international hip-hop dance festival”, where he acted as project leader).
These projects inspire and inform Francesco’s current publication work on individual articles and (hand)book chapters, on a journal special issue devoted to giving a more central role to the investigation of artistic processes instead of administrative processes in cultural policy and management research, and on a monograph tentatively titled "Accountability in Arts and Culture: From Evaluations of Cultural Practices to Evaluations as Cultural Practices".
At the University of Amsterdam, his teaching activities are mainly concentrated around the BA course Managing Arts and Cultural Organisations and the MA course Kunsten, Beleid en Bestuur (Arts, Policy and Administration), and the supervision of MA theses in the programmes Kunst, Cultuur en Politiek (Arts, Culture and Politics) and Museum Studies. Francesco also has a rich and varied teaching experience at an international level, being regularly invited as a Visiting Professor by prominent programmes in his field.
