Prof. dr. Ella Hendriks is full Professor in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage at the Faculty of Humanities, Department of Arts and Culture. She teaches at Minor, Master and Advanced Professional levels, and currently supervises 9 PhD candidates and contributes to the research institute and doctoral school; the Amsterdam School for Heritage, Memory and Material Culture (AHM).
Hendriks has more than thirty years of experience as a practicing paintings conservator at the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem (1987-99) and the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam (1999-2016). She joins this professional experience with a research profile characterized by collaborations across the fields of art history, natural science, imaging science, artificial intelligence and social science. Taking a synthetic approach, she aims to contribute to the development of new and improved strategies for conservation. One example is the research led by Hendriks towards a sustainable management of light-induced colour change in late nineteenth century paintings, as currently implemented in the Van Gogh Museum.
Hendriks forms a linking pin between academia and society through commissions of trust that include Chair of the Advisory Committee to the VriendenLoterij (formerly BankGiroLoterij) Restoration Fund/Advisor to the Board for Vereniging Rembrandt; member of the advisory board for the Dutch register for accredited conservators (Restauratoren Register); member of the National Council for Cultural Research (NOE). She is Scientific Working Group member for the Netherlands Institute for Conservation, Art and Science (NICAS) and co-organizes the bi-weekly online NICAS Colloquium.
Hendriks has authored >100 publications, including peer-reviewed articles for art journals (e.g. Burlington Magazine), conservation journals (e.g. London National Gallery Technical Bulletin, Studies in Conservation) and science journals (e.g. Angewandte Chemie, Colour Research and Application, Analytical Chemistry, Heritage Science, Signal Processing Magazine), as well as collection/exhibition catalogues, books, chapters and proceedings.
