Profile
In February 2007, I took up my current post as Associate Professor at the Amsterdam Centre for Ancient Studies and Archaeology. Before, I was director of the Netherlands Institute in Athens. I acquired my PhD degree in 1999 with a dissertation on Mycenaean pottery in the Levant, Cyprus and Italy.
Teaching
My teaching assignment is Mediterranean archaeology, with an emphasis on the pre- and protohostoric periods of the wider Greek World. In addition, I teach courses concerning archaeological theory and museum- and heritage archaeology. A particular field of attention is also the history of archaeology.
Research
One of my research interests revolves around Mediterranean interconnections of pre- and protohistoric Greece. As such, the western periphery of Greece, has my particular attention, as is also clear from my fieldwork on the Ionian island of Zakynthos. The Zakynthos project is embedded in wider research on the interconnections of the Ionian Islands in the central Mediterranean.
In addition, I am interested in the social context of Archaeology and the history of archaeology. In particular, I am interested in the relations between archaeological methodology and scholarly and popular interpretations of the past. In this framework, I conduct research on the Archaeology of Archaeology at Ancient Troy.
Valorisation
In collaboration with the Illustere School of UvA, I have been organising courses on Greek archaeology for high school teachers in Classical languages, History and other. Also, I am the contact-person for the Wout Arentzen Fonds of the AUF, which aims to stimulate research into the History of Archaeology
Zakynthos
Since 2005, I have been directing archaeological fieldwork on the island of Zakynthos in the Ionian sea. The Zakynthos Archaeology project is a cooperation between the Ephorate of Antiquities at Zakynthos and the Netherlands Institute at Athens. Aim of the project is to relate the spatial and diachronic distribution of finds to the dynamics of the landscape of the island. To this aim a variety of researches are carried out, such archaeological survey and excavation, geological mapping, remote sensing, interviewing and others. For more information, see websites below.
Amsterdam Troy Project: Archaeology of Archaeology
Since 2016, I am participating at excavations at Ancient Troy in Turkey. The excavations are directed by Professor Rüstem Aslan from from Çanakkale Onzekiz Mart University in Turkey. Since 2017, the research of the Amsterdam Troy Project revolves around the theme of the Archaeology of Archaeology at Ancient Troy.
