Maryn Wilkinson is an Assistant Professor of Film Studies in the Department of Media and Culture at the University of Amsterdam and an educational expert for the Faculty of Humanities at TLC FGw. Her research focuses on feminist film and media studies. She examines the visibility, representation, and labour of women in film and media culture, with particular emphasis on the historiography of female filmmakers and media producers—their work, stylistic signatures, and authorship. Maryn also maintains a research line on celebrity culture and fandom, especially Taylor Swift, and the politics and aesthetics of contemporary American popular culture more broadly.
Maryn studied Film and Television Studies at the University of Kent in Canterbury (BA, 2002) and the University of Warwick (MA, 2003) in the UK, and completed her PhD at the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (2013) with a thesis on the neoconservative backlash against feminism and the representation of teenage girls in 1980s American cinema. She has taught in the Department of Media Studies since 2004 and is currently co-editing a volume on Taylor Swift (with Joyce Goggin) and working on a collaborative research project aimed at increasing the visibility and recognition of female film and media makers in the Netherlands.
