About the Masterclass

Siyabizwa — we are being called. In isiXhosa, ukubizwa means to be called: by ancestors, by comrades, by the dead and the not-yet-met, by the work that is waiting for us.

This masterclass shares a practice called grounded sensing — a technique of listening to how one is called, and of writing from that call. Drawing from their current book project Courage to Liberate, zethu Matebeni opens with an encounter of listening to soil, and what that listening demanded of the writing that followed.

In conversation, zethu Matebeni and Stella Nyanzi share their own journeys of writing from what the body knows and what the ground holds — encounters that required courage before they became text.

Participants are invited to bring a piece of their own writing, something unfinished or uncertain. There will be time and space to sit with it differently.

In collaboration with the AISSR Exploring Diversity research group.
